Located just 25 miles from Sacramento International Airport, the town of Winters is quaint, charming, and a perfect stop for wine, food, and adventure lovers. But why just stop in when you can spend the night at a gem of a Yolo County hotel – the luxury, boutique Hotel Winters.
Boutique hotel is a centerpiece in a charming town
Open since Fall 2019, this excellent boutique hotel offers 78 oversized rooms (and by oversized, we do mean really huge). It serves as a perfect base for wedding guests, adventure seekers, foodies, and wine lovers alike. It is located right in the historic center of Winters, surrounded by widely recognized restaurants such as the Buckhorn Grill and Putah Creek Café, as well as tasting rooms featuring the wines of Turkovich Family Winery and Berryessa Gap. In fact, there are seven wineries within 25 miles of the hotel.
Lake Berryessa is less than 15 miles away, perfect for watersports, hiking, and birdwatching. Closer to the hotel front door, you can also book a hot air balloon trip with Yolo Ballooning Adventures. They are amazing folks, and their trips start just around the corner from the hotel front door at the Turkovich Family Wines tasting room. This Yolo County hotel perfect for relaxing too
Sometimes, a stay at a hotel is just about relaxing, too, and you can do all that here. There is a full-service spa that is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, a rooftop bar with epic sunset views, a delightful and refreshing water lounge (think waterfall and shallow wading pool surrounded by chairs on a peaceful patio area), and an on-site restaurant (Carboni's Ristorante Bar & Marketplace). The restaurant is an ideal place for a happy hour drink, breakfast (Friday through Sunday only), dinner, or just deciding to hang out and watch the chefs at work from seats in front of the exhibition kitchen. We were also told a hotel happy hour was coming soon, as well as lounge chairs that would be sitting in the pool for a truly cooling experience!
Rooms in Hotel Winters are huge!
This is a boutique hotel in every way … except size – huge rooms, wide hallways, high ceilings. From the moment we entered the lobby and checked in, until we walked down a long hallway to find our room, there was certainly a modern sophistication to the appearance and décor. But in terms of small? Nothing doing.
We walked into our Courtyard King room, and practically had to squint to see the other end – slight exaggeration, naturally. But at over 400 square feet and those spaciously high ceilings, there is ample room to move and not feel stuffy or claustrophobic -- even if one spouse has luggage known to explode everywhere (in this case, that would be Michael).
Since the hotel barely opened before COVID shutdowns and limitations, the rooms are still a bit bare in their bigness, with just a smattering of wall art and a sparseness of décor. Not that the clean lines were a bother, but we were told a bit more décor is coming. There was good light and extra USB plugs – always a plus.
But the décor is a small matter since a hotel room’s star qualities are the quality of sleep you can get and whether you can work well if needed. Here, the bed was supremely comfy, the bathroom equally huge (room for another bed almost), and the Wi-Fi ridiculously fast – fastest we have tested in a hotel room in a very long time – and a desk quite spacious. In addition, there is a convenient in-room fridge (for the wine you may acquire!) and a coffee and tea station with all you need for your morning (or evening) fix. And the hotel was spotless everywhere we went.
Bottom line, the Hotel Winters is a boutique Yolo County hotel worth spending some time at if you're looking for a quick escape in an idyllic historic town.
