Though it arguably boasts one of the most spectacular waterfalls in California and an amazing display of wildflowers in the spring, North Table Mountain Ecological Preserve (just “Table Mountain” preserve to locals) is surprisingly unknown to many outside the area.Read More

Located in the foothills of the northern Sierra Nevada, just 7 miles north of Oroville (approximately one hour drive north of Sacramento), the 3,315-acre Table Mountain preserve looks rather non-descript from afar. From Oroville, you can see the dark basalt (volcanic) cliffs and a hint of a flat plateau above, but little more. But get closer and you will experience spectacular wildflowers and amazing waterfalls.Read More
While most travelers will never encounter a bed bug in their lives, it is still wise to know how to avoid bed bugs when traveling and how to avoid getting bitten or bringing home your own little colony. Hotel quality, or lack thereof, has little to do with whether or not there might be a bed bug or two lurking.Read More
How do you go about choosing the best flight for your next trip? Allegiance to an airline simply on the grounds of earning status is losing its luster. Prices are going up, benefits are getting harder to earn, miles are becoming harder to redeem, and even once revered higher status may get you little more than advance boarding and a free checked bag these days. Forget airline loyalty.Read More
Admittedly, I am a lover of a good cuppa which is why I fell in love with the GSI Ultralight Java Drip and quite like its companion Infinity Backpacker Mug. Don’t be misled by the “backpacker” in the mug’s name. You can take it on any kind of travel where lightweight and versatile are king. The Java Drip ($9.95) and Infinity Mug ($9.95) aren’t brand spanking new in the GSI Outdoors line but finding a good cup of coffee wherever you are never goes out of style. That comes especially true with this travel drip coffeemaker “cone” that weighs...Read More

There are plenty quiet and magical places sans crowds in Florida if you know where to look — places we like to refer to as Florida’s hidden gems. Rest assured that when Ponce de León first arrived in Florida in 1513 he wasn’t greeted by Walt Disney or Mickey Mouse. You too can get to Florida and not just find theme parks or senior citizens’ specials. The Sunshine State has hidden gems that whisk you way beyond the expected.Read More
Breathable, ultralight, weather resistant, stretchy, soft, stuffable, recycled, recyclable – what else can you ask for in a great lightweight softshell jacket to take on your travels, stuff in your pack, or wrap around your waist? Sweden’s Houdini Sportswear Motion Light Houdi has been in its line of Motion Light products, and I love it as a superb travel jacket. It is so lightweight at about eight ounces, yet this Motion Light Houdi (yes, a play on hoody and Houdini!) offers light rain and wind resistance, two front hand pockets, a hood, a full zip, and a bottom hem draw...Read More
How many reasons do you need to visit Trondheim, Norway? Founded by Vikings as a trading post in 997 AD, Trondheim is one of Norway’s oldest cities, and one of its largest. Located on a peninsula it enjoys a relatively mild maritime climate (by northern European standards, of course). Trondheim also boasts a vibrant cultural life and despite its size, its historic city center still feels intimate. And, the city is well known for its many festivals, variety of excellent restaurants as well as musical and art scene. But there are other very good reasons to visit Trondheim – eight of them in fact and we give them to you here.Read More
